These rock.

Media Files

These files are platform- and system-independent PDF files. This means that they work on both Macs and IBM-PCs, from System 7.x to 9.x and OSX on the Mac and on Win95/98/00/NT on the PC (with appropriate sound card installed). They are for use with the Integrated Chinese Level One Textbook and are really meant to be only used on-screen, either directly on a computer monitor or with a projector system. Besides, I have locked these files so that they cannot be printed out anyway. And even if you could print them out it would be a waste of resources since all you would be able to hear would be paper rustling.

Note: I have completed only Lessons 1-11 in PDF. Lessons 12-23 are in QuickTime movie (.mov) format. I urge teachers and students equally to send me an email let me know whether either of these types of files are helpful in any way.

While the files for Level 1 Lessons 1-11 were initially generated using PrintToPDF, post processing of the files to incorporate audio had to be done with the commercial version of Acrobat Exchange 3.0. The files are large due to the fact that Acrobat can only use uncompressed audio files; optimization also does not shrink the files any appreciable amount. They are posted here in .sit archive files, and can be decompressed with Aladdin Expander.

Remember, you will need the Aladdin Expander to decompress these files. Once decompressed, you will need the Acrobat Reader in order to use these multimedia files. These files are set up to open and readjust automatically to your computer's screen size. The first page in each file contains four links: two large links (one for each half of the lesson) and two small links at the bottom of the page (my email address and my home page). By clicking once on the large blue links, Acrobat Reader will take you to the first page of that dialogue or narrative. The first page has embedded in it the entire section read at normal speed. To stop this from playing, simply click the first sentence (or question) in the dialogue (or narrative). This is useful if you wish to scroll down and follow the audio across pages, and then wish to return to the first page and go over the slower-paced audio for more controlled listening practice.

Each sentence within the multimedia files are hot linked to a sound clip read at slower than normal speed (roughly half). Simply clicking once on a sentence (or question) will activate the audio. If a sentence is split across lines, particularly in the narratives (or diaries or letters), then clicking on the longer of the two segments should activate the audio. Again, clicking on one of these links will interrupt the audio that begins automatically when you open the first page of each half of the lesson.
